Product details

Naples has remained untouched by the disenchantment of the world and is still a modern city. Geologically layered, it has developed an affinity for the in-between realm: transgender individuals and spirits, adoption communities as families, anonymous skulls as ancestors. Ulrich van Loyen embarks on a journey with his scientific travelogue into these threshold zones, attempting to decipher the matrix of this city through its cults of the dead. He is guided less by European high culture, for which Naples represents a constant source of otherness, and more by participant observation of the lives of so-called ordinary people. In the streets of Sanità, in the underground churches of the "souls in purgatory," among Camorristi posing as social workers, and through friendships with seers who bring the dead to speak, aiming to topple political clientelism.
