Organisms relate to their environment as perceiving beings. However, perceptions seem to stand in contrast to the world as it is "in itself," acting as a mirror, distortion, or even an invention of reality. Wolfgang Welsch demonstrates how perceptions do not statically oppose the environments of living beings, but rather how nature and culture intertwine through perceptions from an evolutionary perspective. Perceptions realize potential forms of nature while simultaneously changing them recursively. Therefore, the nature encountered by living beings is always already inscribed with countless perceptions of other and past living beings. Perception (Aisthesis) and sensory preferences (aesthetics) are the engines of evolution. They differentiate and culturalize nature, just as it is realized in perceptions.
