Pastoral associates are mystagogues. Based on conversations with this professional group, the present study describes the mystagogical self-understanding of pastoral associates and develops a practice-derived concept of mystagogy that updates and specifies Karl Rahner's demand that Christians must "be mystagogues" in light of pastoral challenges. Claudia Guggemos demonstrates that for the future of the Church, mystagogy must be a central core competency for both paid and volunteer staff at all levels. This demand is particularly illustrated through practice-relevant mystagogical learning processes that are motivating and inspiring.
