The Second Vatican Council described the Church as the People of God, which is always on a journey. In this process, it faces the challenges of each era and is thus subject to constant change. Religious beliefs and the ways of expressing faith in prayer, worship, and the social form of the Church also evolve. Maria Widl therefore analyzes the challenges of this change, such as accelerated secularization, the Church in the diaspora or in the mission land of Germany, as well as the increasing privatization of religion. From this perspective, she develops a model of a Church that engages with the concrete circumstances of people's lives and critically accompanies the changes of the times. In doing so, she opens up perspectives for a future-oriented pastoral care that serves the lives of people in all their transformations and disruptions.
