A fundamental characteristic of Japanese history and tradition is its ethnological, religious, and cultural diversity. This reality necessitates intensive efforts for the inculturation of the Christian faith into the respective sociocultural contexts. In her book, Haruko K. Okano presents culturally sensitive and intercultural theological reflections that understand culture as a new "locus theologicus" and thus as a distinct place of theological insight. In this way, she illuminates both the cultural and religious background of Japan. On the other hand, she describes, from a Christian perspective, points of connection as well as experiences of estrangement, thereby making a forward-looking contribution to interreligious understanding and to one's own identity.
