Risks and side effects of psychotherapy: The recording of adverse events, side effects, and interactions has a long tradition in the field of drug research and has had a legal basis for some years. Most psychosocial forms of intervention are far from this practice, and psychotherapy is no exception. Despite methodological reservations against analogies with pharmacological and medical treatments, different psychotherapy methods, treatment settings, and special fields of application are compared regarding possible side effects and risks. Representatives of the most important therapeutic directions comment on this from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. The aim is to provide quality assurance and guidance for clients, health insurers, and social policymakers.
