Bregenz Forest and Lake Constance in the year 1791 - the shockwaves of the French Revolution begin to shake feudal Europe, and even in Bezau, far removed from the currents of time, the effects are already being felt. In the remote mountain village of Bregenz Forest, the family of young farmer Francisca Mauchin falls apart after her father mysteriously dies while logging. Intrigues force her to leave her farm and hometown to seek her livelihood as a parish cook by Lake Constance, as she reluctantly chooses against fleeing into marriage. The warmth, fertility, and sensuality of the landscapes by the lake initially comfort her over the loss of her home. However, when she becomes pregnant out of wedlock, public morality turns against her. Courageously and with finesse, she defends herself, and her resistance meets an insecure society.
