Max Gubler (1898-1973) was regarded as the exceptional talent of Swiss painting. His work is characterized by a continuity unencumbered by political catastrophes, from Expressionism and New Objectivity around 1919 to the painstakingly wrested paintings of the hitherto completely unknown last phase 1957-1961. The release of the late work, which was kept under lock and key for a long time, now makes a truly comprehensive retrospective possible for the first time. Starting out from his roots in his artistically active family, this monograph traces Max Gubler's creative path by means of around 100 selected works. On the one hand, the chronology of Gubler's artistic development is made accessible; on the other hand, the fundamental thematic areas, Gubler's untiring and, over decades, almost serially worked motifs, are examined in detail: figure paintings, landscapes, Selb.
