Product details

The painter Max Gubler (1898-1973), well-known in Switzerland, collapsed psychologically and physically at the zenith of his success in 1957 and was interned in psychiatric institutions for the last decade and a half of his life. During the first three years of this period of suffering, he painted periodically in clinics and at home, where he was under remote medical supervision. The oeuvre of 400 paintings was hidden from the public. This book presents for the first time the late work of the painter and sketches his life story as a self-fulfilling legend between genius and madness. Important commentaries on the radicalized pictorial production of the crisis period are the unpublished diaries of the art historian and friend Gotthard Jedlicka (1899-1965). In portraits, landscapes, couple paintings, and 'wild heads,' the artist sought to counter the disturbances with a new reality. Visual.
