Max Karl Tilke (February 6, 1869 - August 2, 1942) was a renowned artist and ethnographer. Born in Breslau (Wrocław), in Prussian Silesia, he entered the Berlin Academy of Arts in 1886 and traveled to Italy and Tunisia as a student in 1890. After graduating from the academy, he initially worked in Berlin as an artist and decorator, and then at the Prado in Madrid as a copyist. This period had a significant influence on the development of Tilke's work. After Spain, he worked in Paris as an illustrator in 1900. By this time, he was already known for his knowledge of costumes. Upon returning to Berlin, he began painting works of historical costumes, which earned him a reputation among authorities and high society. In 1911, he was at the Lipperheide Costume Library of the Berlin Arts.
