Product details
In the 14th and 15th centuries, Zurich was a center for the production of tiled stoves and, consequently, stove tiles. The findings from excavations provide a uniquely rich picture of late medieval relief sculpture. Architectural motifs, animals, couples in love, and tournament knights adorned the stoves, which not only provided warmth but also served as representative image carriers in the parlors of city houses and castles. The significance and origin of the image motifs are examined, as well as the development of manufacturing techniques. The urban potters, their products, and the locations of their workshops are listed and discussed in detail. Many potters are known by name, and some even held high political offices. The cultural-historical context of the stove tiles contributes to the history of Zurich in the late Middle Ages.
