Alive until death
French, German, 2011Product details
Living until the end. Surviving. In the Other. This is the last major theme that occupied Ricoeur. The fragments from his estate, presented here for the first time in German translation, are less an engagement with death than with life and survival. It reflects the great trauma of the 20th century, that of those who survived the extermination camps, whom Jorge Semprun refers to in his book "Writing or Living," which Ricoeur engages with, as revenants—neither dead nor alive—those who seemingly survived their own death, having outlived themselves. But it also represents a deeply personal trauma, namely the death of his wife Simone, the stages of which Catherine Goldenstein outlines in the afterword. The idea of mourning or the process of mourning is inspired by this experience of loss, the loss of a loved one. Both traumas are present.
