Giovanni Pico della Mirandola was only 23 years old when he published his Nine Hundred Theses in Rome in 1486. In his concluding remarks, he stated that he would personally reimburse the travel expenses of any scholar who wished to come to Rome to debate the theses. Pico set himself a goal of unprecedented proportions: he wanted to engage in discussions before the Pope with all the scholars of the West about the doctrines of various peoples and their thinkers, about the Kabbalah and the Zoroastrian wisdom teachings, as well as about the diverse theses of Neoplatonism, medieval scholasticism, Orphism, and Arabic and Chaldean wisdom. The aim was to reconcile all the authorities known in the West up to that point and to unify the philosophical and theological traditions of the 15th century into a Christian unity.
