On the difference between the systematic and non-systematic mind

Product details

What exactly do we mean by a system? At the beginning of the 18th century, this was by no means clear: the meanings ranged from the world system, the connection of individual things as they truly exist, to the simple equivalence with hypothesis, and even to the opinion that a system is merely an externally ordered relationship, such as the teachings of a single thinker. For Wolff, who, after his expulsion from Prussia, dealt with the concept of a system during a so-called Marburg side lecture, a system is not an external entity. Rather, the system is based on the application of the correct method (paradigmatically: the mathematical) and is the necessary result of methodical thinking. In doing so, Wolff distinguishes himself from the highly regarded views of the early Enlightenment period.
