Product details

The religious text not only sparked a lengthy dispute with censorship but also provided—much to Kant's surprise—his contemporaries "plenty of reason to talk." No other publication by Kant received as many contributions and reviews in such a short time as his theses on the philosophy of religion. The mere fact that this was Kant's first major publication after the three critiques indicates that he intended more than just a occasional piece. He himself announced his "Philosophical Doctrine of Religion" as a transition from critique to doctrine and explicitly understood it as a response to the question: "What may I hope?" The crucial philosophical question more than 200 years after the publication of the religious text might be: Did Kant hit the mark with his theory of radical evil and his critique of the church?.
