Product details

All people are affected by becoming and passing away. It is not only the things and beings that surround us, but above all ourselves and our loved ones that seem to be subjected to this process. We celebrate birth and mourn death. One thinks of Hölderlin's late, enigmatic text "Becoming in Passing," Nietzsche's dictum that becoming must be shaped by the form of being, and perhaps recalls Bergson's book on creative becoming, not to mention each individual's own perspective on becoming and passing away, which is indeed something fundamentally defining of life. Remarkably, there are almost no philosophical or scientific theories throughout the history of thought that attempt to explain this phenomenon and what it entails. Aristotle is a significant exception quite early in the development of science, yet he remains the only one with an objective theoretical claim and a correspondingly well-thought-out elaboration, up to Whitehead and Bergson in the 20th century. Since then, there has been little new on the subject. Aristotle's highly interesting work "On Becoming and Passing Away" and the conceptual exploration of this fundamental fact of nature have remained almost unknown to this day. This edition brings to the forefront a text that has long been unjustly overlooked. The question of becoming and passing away is one of the fundamental questions of all existence.
