Between the publication of "The Phenomenology of Perception" in 1945 and Merleau-Ponty's death in 1961, only 16 years elapsed. During this period, Merleau-Ponty undertook the project of expanding and grounding his reflections by exploring the phenomenon of expressivity across various cultural dimensions, aiming to develop a philosophy of culture of his own kind based on expressive behavior, and, on the other hand, to uncover an ontological foundation for the aesthetic position of humans in the world. Due to his untimely death, Merleau-Ponty was unable to fully realize and integrate these projects. His last major publication, titled "Signs," which gathers the most important contributions from that time and is now available for the first time in a complete German translation, makes the framework clear.
