The fascination with Meister Eckhart is not only felt by those engaged with new religious or interreligious impulses. He also attracts interest in spiritual, literary, and religious criticism. The Dominican Meister Eckhart (circa 1260-1328) taught, like Albertus Magnus, at the Studium Generale of the Dominicans in Cologne, and also twice, like Thomas Aquinas, at the theological chair in Paris (1303/04 and 1311-1313). He is counted among the philosophers of the German Albert School, which has produced a number of outstanding thinkers. Eckhart, the magister sacrae scripturae (Professor of Holy Scripture), developed an independent philosophy and theology that fascinated many even then and continues to be rediscovered. His final years in Cologne were overshadowed by an inquisitorial process.
