Product details
Emily Ruete (August 30, 1844, in Beit il Mtoni near Zanzibar City as Sayyida Salme, Princess of Oman and Zanzibar; February 29, 1924, in Jena) was an Omani-Zanzibari princess who lived in Germany as a writer and teacher after marrying the German merchant Rudolph Heinrich Ruete. Princess Salme was born as the daughter of Sayyid Said, the reigning Sultan of Oman and Zanzibar, and a Circassian concubine who had been captured and enslaved. She grew up in the Beit il Mtoni palace near Zanzibar City. She enjoyed a carefree childhood in a luxurious environment and taught herself to read and write. She had a special bond of trust with her half-brother Majid, who taught her how to ride and shoot. From 1851, she lived in his house. In 1866, Princess Salme met the merchant Heinrich Ruete from Hamburg.
