The volume presents, partly for the first time edited or translated, about 70 reports and comments on human experimentation from the Enlightenment through the Nazi era to the present day. Thus, for the first time, a compendium of annotated source texts is available that comprehensively documents the highly controversial topic of human trials. It unfolds a panorama of experimental practices in medicine, psychology, education, and social sciences, clearly illustrating how closely the experimental setups are linked to historically specific concepts of humanity and models of society. Human experimentation—both a scandalous topic and a common scientific practice—is made tangible in its cultural-historical dimension. The editors have been working since 2003 in the interdisciplinary DFG research group "Cultural History of Human Experimentation" at the University of Bonn.
