The concept of culture is notoriously diffuse. However, the reason for this ambiguity is simple. The term refers to a complex whole, as Edward B. Tylor has already noted. In every culture, physical postures, mental states, and social relations intertwine. And each culture compares itself in this intertwining with other cultures. Even worse, this intertwining only becomes apparent when a culture draws attention to itself in cultural contact. At that moment, what was previously taken for granted becomes contingent. How does one articulate the relationship between body, mind, and society when each of these elements becomes a variable and each of these variables operates within a restricted functional area?
