All attempts to implement communism have failed: "communist" can no longer be an adjective that programmatically qualifies a party, a state, or a policy. Emancipatory politics can no longer rely on established references that dictate its content and methods. But should the project of emancipation ultimately be abandoned? Today, it is clear: communism has failed, and the parliamentary organized democracy in conjunction with contemporary capitalism is the only and best choice we have. Badiou poses the question of whether we are not in a comparable situation to the young Marx around 1840, facing a similar deadlock. Should we not, like Marx, affirm the impossible in times of impossibility and pursue the communist hypothesis?.
