Messengers have repeatedly been at the center of various research studies over the past decades. One fascinating aspect is that messenger communication reveals a characteristic of pre-modern media, namely a pronounced participation in the absent. Literary texts such as Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival (around 1200) integrate this feature of messenger communication into imaginary worlds and play it out on both the level of representation and the represented: Parzival not only contains an above-average number of varied and complex messenger scenes, but it also reflects significantly on the act of storytelling itself. The study aims to analyze messenger communication to gain insights into the media phenomena of the pre-modern era while also uncovering essential knowledge about its significance.
