In the second half of the 1980s, the East Berlin headquarters of the Academy of Educational Sciences (APW) employed nearly 800 staff members. Just over 700 employees could be verified through a membership file of the union, which was found amidst the chaos of the fall of the GDR, by the Federal Commissioner for the Stasi Records of the former GDR. About 100 of them worked for the Stasi as unofficial collaborators. More than half were recruited during their employment at the large educational research institution. Based primarily on preserved IM files, it is recounted under their pseudonyms how the educational scientists were recruited, what tasks they had to fulfill in secret, and how the former IMs behaved during the reform of the APW in 1990.
