On February 4, 1936, 26-year-old David Frankfurter shot Wilhelm Gustloff, the head of the NSDAP's foreign organization in Switzerland. While the shooter faded into obscurity after a few years, the "blood witness of the movement" received solemn honors. The National Socialists named the KdF "dream ship" after him, which sank off the coast of Pomerania in January 1945. This volume portrays the protagonists, describes the assassination, and reconstructs the trial against the young defendant, whose case bears parallels to that of Herschel Grynszpan. However, unlike in Grynszpan's case, the National Socialists limited themselves to a propaganda battle in the year of the Olympic Games.
