Product details

For a long time, trade unions have struggled to analyze the biographies of their leading representatives. Bochum union researcher Karl Lauschte pinpointed the dilemma: "But unlike politicians, entrepreneurs, scientists, artists, or military personnel, historiography has shown little interest in them to this day. This is not only because union members typically leave behind few personal sources, but it is certainly also due to the widespread view that they, as functionaries in a bureaucratically organized apparatus, do not develop an individual profile that would make a closer examination of their biographies seem worthwhile." However, it is now widely accepted that the filter of individual life stories allows for a vivid representation of the broad spectrum of union interpretations of social and political crises, as well as the diversity of union action proposals. Early formative factors in the biographies, such as social background, regional environment, societal mentality during vocational training, and generation-specific experiences of leading representatives provide various explanations for the political and theoretical positioning of trade unions in the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, and the post-war period.
