Product details

To what extent is the public-media discourse on women in National Socialism part of the German memory discourse on National Socialism and the Holocaust, and how do heteronormative and hegemonic notions of gender and gender role behavior shape this discourse? This study addresses these questions regarding women in the reporting of SPIEGEL from 1947 to 2010. The analysis makes it clear that, not least, mass media and their functions of selection, representation, and dissemination of information construct a culture of remembrance. In this context, the category of gender structures both the selection of information deemed relevant for remembrance in media reporting and the manner of reporting itself. Such a media-mediated and gender-structured discourse of remembrance influences public perception and evaluation of National Socialism in general and the role of women in National Socialism in particular, as the fundamental assumption of the study suggests. Christina Herkommer is a graduate sociologist. She currently works as a research associate in the second Independent Expert Group on Antisemitism, which was established by the German Bundestag in 2015. With this work, she earned her doctorate in 2014 at the Center for Antisemitism Research at the Technical University of Berlin.
