Elisabeth Hofacker (1928-1988) grew up in the Bayerisches Viertel in Berlin-Schöneberg, where her parents, Wilhelm and Luise Teske, ran a shoemaker's workshop. They were members of the "Christian Assembly," an evangelical free church community that saw its main task in proclaiming the Gospel. In her book, the author describes how her family, as devout Christians, stood by their Jewish customers and friends even after 1933, supporting them in various ways despite the risks involved. Luise and Wilhelm Teske were posthumously honored multiple times for their assistance after the war, including in 2009 by the Israeli memorial Yad Vashem as "Righteous Among the Nations.".
