Christoph Wonneberger was one of the pioneers of the Peaceful Revolution. Always combative, he was as uncomfortable for cautious, maneuvering church officials as he was for the SED and its state security, who put him under immense pressure. They could never force him to give up. As a pastor of the Weinberg Church in Dresden, he fought for the establishment of a social peace service and founded the tradition of peace prayers, which he developed into politically charged events in Leipzig with system-breaking power. Thus, he significantly contributed to the nonviolent outcome of the revolution in '89. Persistence and inflexibility characterized him, as did the drive for freedom, peace, and justice. His life story shows: Nothing has to remain as it is, and it is worth resisting.
