Product details

After the Nazis came to power, terror against Jews and dissenters began in the German Reich. The gradually but rapidly deteriorating living conditions and increasing persecution forced thousands of people to flee. Outside of Hitler's sphere of power and influence, they had to take the risk of trying to build a new existence. Compared to their European neighboring countries, the Scandinavian countries accepted very few refugees. Nevertheless, they, especially neutral Sweden, became important centers of exile due to the political developments in Europe. As a result, the emigrants made significant contributions to the art, culture, science, and politics of the host countries. This volume is dedicated to a little-researched chapter of historiography: the Jewish intellectual exile in Scandinavia.
