Since 1990, nearly 7,000 books on the history of the GDR have been published in unified Germany. The number of new titles remains almost constant each year. Historians repeatedly debate whether the GDR has been over-researched. In fact, the figures say more about the ongoing public interest in the SED dictatorship than about the significance of the topic in historical science. In a comprehensive expert report, historians Dierk Hoffmann, Michael Schwartz, and Hermann Wentker describe the perspectives of the GDR topic for future historical research. 18 authors take a controversial stance on this and simultaneously formulate their own new questions regarding the old topic.
