How did the criminal police and the public prosecutor's office operate under the conditions of the Nazi dictatorship and the war? How did the police and judiciary address crimes that occur in any system, and how did they combat crimes specific to the Nazi regime and those caused by the war? The history of crime and policing in Berlin during National Socialism reveals a complex system of responsibilities, rivalries, abuses of power, intrigues, and much bureaucracy, as well as the active involvement in the crimes of National Socialism from the very beginning. The contributions in this volume provide insight into a largely unexplored area of the terror state, such as the prosecution of forced laborers or the system for interrupting concentration camp detention for the purpose of investigation or enforcement of a judicial matter, followed by subsequent "re-integration" into a concentration camp.
