The anthology documents the discussions that have been held for several years between scholars, artists, and representatives from the state and civil society in Berlin and Buenos Aires regarding urban memory of dictatorships and human rights violations. Despite the different histories of Argentina and Germany, both countries face similar questions concerning how to deal with the past. German and Argentine authors report on various forms of remembrance and discuss experiences and challenges related to monuments, memorials, and sites of terror that are to become places of commemoration. Different artistic languages of remembrance are also addressed, as well as the opportunities and difficulties of the interplay between civil society and state actors in the realm of memory.
