Where is the German science system heading? Is it still able to meet the major societal challenges? Doubts about this are increasingly growing. The book analyzes the German scientific landscape and highlights existing deficits in research and teaching. It develops the perspective of a "transformative science" that points the way to a sustainable science system for the future. This is currently being driven by organized civil society, pioneering universities and institutes, leading state governments, foundations, and student initiatives.
