Product details

Every story has a story. This monograph explores a narrative type that narrative research, following Bechstein, has named "Tränenkrüglein" (Little Tear Jug). The subject of this book is a compact exemplary tale that has fascinated people for over 1000 years: A woman weeps incessantly for her dead child; she only ends her obsessive mourning when the child itself urges her to do so in a vision, as her excessive grief prevents it from attaining the bliss of heaven. At its core, the example describes the teaching mission of Christianity regarding the resurrection of Jesus as the ultimate comfort for humanity. An anonymous Syrian recorded the circulating tale in the early 9th century; a Dominican from the 13th century ingeniously anchored it as an import from the East in his compendium, thereby preserving it for Christian Western Europe.
