The Last Witnesses of Auschwitz. On January 27, 1945, Soviet soldiers liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp. More than a million people had been murdered here by the Nazis; only a few prisoners survived. Those who endured the camp often could or would not speak about their experiences in the years following liberation. They felt unable to discuss the excesses of degradation they had suffered in Auschwitz, or they found no one willing to listen to their memories.
