The simultaneity of discussions about multilingualism, "multi-culti," as well as the "anti-minaret initiative" and the acceptance of the popular initiative "Against Mass Immigration" in Switzerland is evidence of a paradigm shift in the media's approach to migration: the foreign no longer needs to be simply immunologically repelled but is presented as an inherent hybridity of society. However, this can also ignite visual and verbal reactions of violence and exhaustion. The author analyzes relevant image-text arrangements on the topic of migration in Swiss print media to trace the media-formed, socio-cultural (re)ordering in dealing with the foreign through visual discourse analysis and interviews with image and text editors. Precisely because migration has become a permanent topic in the media, it is suitable for this analysis.
