Product details

Urban restructuring is a current focus of federal urban development policy in Germany, which, like the widely demanded citizen participation, has so far been scarcely analyzed systematically through concrete case studies. Against the backdrop of the "Urban Restructuring East" and "Urban Restructuring West" programs, Miriam Fritsche analyzes local citizen participation processes in two urban neighborhoods: Marzahn-Nord (Berlin) and Tenever (Bremen). To identify factors that promote or hinder participation, she places the local forms of participation within the context of local participation cultures. It becomes clear that the understanding of participation among key actors, as well as the micro-political internal structure of local resident committees, significantly influence the dominant forms of participation, their scope, and intensity. The book is aimed at educators and students of urban geography.
