Law student Gregor Bienek wants to become a writer - and begins his career in East Berlin with stories critical of the system. But success eludes him. And so he adapts and writes only what is expected of him. In his second novel, "Irreführung der Behörden" ("Misleading the Authorities"), published in 1973, Jurek Becker humorously addresses the conflict of an author between artistic freedom and censorship, between self-realization and self-denial, drawing on his own experiences in the GDR.
