The author and illustrator Wilhelm Busch is one of the greats in his field, who incisively and subtly takes aim at his fellow human beings and, not least, himself with stylistic precision. Virtue, vice, hypocrisy, love, hate, envy, and petty-mindedness—there is hardly anything that Busch does not address in his partly lovable, partly mocking manner, even if it takes the form of a cliché. As a proverbial rascal, he has shaped German humor and inspired colleagues such as Kästner, Tucholsky, and Ringelnatz.
