The book provides a comprehensive presentation of the relationship between modernity, modernism, and postmodernity on sociological, philosophical, and literary levels, as well as a delineation of the terms early modern period, modernity, modernism, postmodernity, posthistory, and post-industrial society. The author attempts to avoid both ideologization and indifference by proposing a dialogical theory in the final chapter that mediates between the general and the particular, between indifference and ideological commitment.
