Modernity has set itself an insoluble task. Its claim to make the world transparent was doomed to fail from the outset because it denied the fundamental ambiguity of the world and the randomness of our existence, our society, and our culture. Every attempt to eliminate this fact has only generated new ambiguity—a vicious circle that ultimately culminated in National Socialism's attempt to eradicate all that is ambiguous. Only postmodernity bids farewell to the promise of creating a clear world. It recognizes that the desire to resolve the immutable ambiguity of human existence is equivalent to the desire to deprive humans of their freedom. Perhaps postmodernity is preparing us for a time when we will have learned to live with the dual and the multiple.
