The artistic works discussed here are not materialized pieces, as is common in traditional visual arts. They do not account for passive viewers but propose actions to the observers. The nearly 50 instructions presented in the first part are diverse. Yoko Ono suggests a meditative act: "Light a match and watch till it goes out" (1955). Alison Knowles is constructive: "Make a salad" (1962). Barnett Newman presents a piece titled "Be!" (1949). The recipient always has the choice of whether to follow the call or not. Unlike traditional art, they explicitly decide whether to do something and what that something is. A large group of different instructions suggests doing nothing. The second part first shows the broader context of instructions (from the Ten Commandments to do-it-yourself) and poses questions.
