The Gospel of John in Medieval Reception is a comprehensive work that examines the profound impact of the Gospel of John on Western intellectual history. Despite its significant theological and cultural influences, the medieval reception of this text has been insufficiently researched until now. This volume brings together contributions from various disciplines such as biblical studies, church history, Latin philology, medieval studies, philosophy, and art history to address this research gap. The chapters provide a detailed analysis of the reception of the Gospel of John in Latin and Old High German biblical poetry, in paraphrases and legendary traditions, as well as in mystical and philosophical contexts. Liturgical and dramatic aspects, including the role of the Evangelist John in Passion plays, are also highlighted. Additionally, art historical contributions on book art, patronage, and pilgrimage are presented, showcasing the extensive veneration of the Evangelist.
