The present book addresses the four classic comedies of Molière, which hold a special place within the colorful body of approximately 30 plays, according to the understanding of their author. The text interpretations highlight the thematic structure of the works discussed and distinguish them from both the rest of Molière's oeuvre and the comedies of other classics (Corneille, Racine). Molière takes a stance from the perspective of skeptical Epicureanism on contentious, by no means outdated moral and religious issues of contemporary society. In developing the theme, Molière relies, as can be demonstrated by the wording of the text, on Aristotle's teaching that ethical virtues should be understood as the mean between two opposing vices ("Nicomachean Ethics").
