The protagonist, whose name graces the title, was once a famous private detective who solved countless cases in both Europe and the United States. However, after the Wall Street crash, he went bankrupt, leading his fiancée Adeline to leave him. While the story is set in Paris, there are flashbacks to New Orleans and plenty of action sequences that could easily rival a Hollywood blockbuster, featuring daring balcony escapes, chases, or rather, a bicycle chasing a car. All of this builds up to a dramatic showdown that takes place in the Parisian catacombs. This narrative is enveloped in absinthe-fueled hallucinations.
