In twelve chapters, the book provides an overview of the transportation history of the historical Rhaetian Alpine passes. It takes into account the entire territory of the former Churrätien, which includes not only the present-day canton of Graubünden but also the entire Rhine Valley from Lake Constance, including Vorarlberg and the Walensee area, as well as Glarnerland, the Urseren Valley, Valtellina, the upper Adige region, Landeck up to the Arlberg Pass, and the Paznaun Valley. The settlement, economic, linguistic, and cultural history of this region is also partially considered. Each chapter includes selected texts from literature, oral tradition, and travel reports by well-known authors. These excerpts appear in their original language and are accompanied by a commentary. Where the linguistic circumstances warrant it, there are additional notes.
