Tuning is a highly polyphonic achievement of the Enlightenment. The 19th century largely buried it. This volume reactivates it. The tension between musical tuning and polyphony strikes at the heart of the Enlightenment and is more relevant than ever in light of today’s dense global interconnectedness. Must individual beings be tuned to one another like instruments in an orchestra? And how can individual voices still articulate and be perceived uniquely? In this volume, musicologists, literary scholars, and cultural scientists explore various positions of the 18th century and their significance for our time. Initially, the specific discourses on tuning and temperaments of the Enlightenment are examined within the broad field of music practice and theory, as well as literature. In the second part, the themes come further into focus.
