Product details

Fans are not only enchanting small works of art but also impressive testimonies to European cultural history. From the 17th to the 19th century, they were an essential accessory of women's fashion and a precious status symbol. The sticks are carved from mother-of-pearl, ivory, or tortoiseshell, partially silvered and gilded, while the leaves are made of paper, silk, or the finest parchment. The leaves were painted with themes from ancient mythology, Christian religion, or with scenes from society and theater. This richly illustrated two-volume catalog presents approximately 500 fans from the Ute Michaels Foundation, one of the most significant collections of historical fans in Germany. With joy and passion, but above all with expertise, the collector gathered these airy treasures from three centuries over decades. They have now found a permanent home as a loan at the Stiftung Schloss Friedenstein Gotha.
