Product details

A reception history of the German-Jewish scholar Moritz Lazarus (1824-1903) situated between popular philosophy, social psychology, and Jewish ethics. M. Lazarus: Born as Moses and Germanized as Moritz, the German-Jewish philosopher published none of his works under this first name, but always as "M." The ambivalence of this self-designation reflects both his reception history and that of German-Jewish intellectuals in the 19th century. Mathias Berek traces this reception history through its resonance in newspapers, magazines, and books. Lazarus was well-connected in Wilhelmine society—yet the successful speaker and scholar was increasingly perceived and marginalized as a Jew. He was a co-founder of folk psychology, but the University of Bern established a chair for it.
